Chemical Elements; Earth, Air, Water and Fire

Fun with the elements! Experiments, activities and games designed to teach the chemistry of earth, air, water and fire. Chemistry made simple!

Chemical Elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire involves dramatic chemical reactions, the science of fire, acid, alkaline and neutral, identifying soil properties (earthworms, worm poo, PH, soil types), lichens, determining air purity and water purity, and examining the impact of water and air pollution upon human health, biodiversity and the environment.

The session covers:

  • Materials – Solids, liquids and gases
  • Rock, soil & fossils (working scientifically)
  • How to analyse information, evaluate information, draw conclusions and record and present findings
  • Fire triangle
  • Chemical reactions
  • Earth atmosphere
  • Water and air pollution

Cross-cutting themes and other Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLE) groups embedded in the session:

  • Expressive arts
  • Environmental awareness
  • Literacy
  • Maths and numeracy
  • Communication
